We met in a performance art class at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1993, and the following year we settled in Montreal. From the beginning we have been interested in the porous relations between art and everyday life. Since 2017 we have been collaborating on Carried Away, a durational performance-installation that focuses on the acts of live drawing and witnessing. Site-specificity, improvisation, and contingency are central aspects of this project. Can the drawer stay focused on her drawing, knowing she might be interrupted at any moment? And can the witness sustain his ability to respond effectively while others are watching? Carried Away allows us to combine our diverse practices (drawing, performance, installation, photography, video, writing) and at times exchange roles (Vida films, Jack draws). Carried Away has been presented at the Comox Valley Art Gallery, BC; Galerie B-312, Montreal; Festival Ad ognuno la sua p’arte, Italy; Villa des arts, Senegal; La Chambre Blanche, Québec; Centre Bòlit, Catalonia; At Home Gallery, Slovakia; Cinémathèque québécoise, Montreal. Each iteration of the work has developed through a residency, giving us time to respond to the unique situation, be it a gallery, a courtyard, a medieval chapel, a former synagogue, or a dark room.

At Centre SAGAMIE we will create a poster/pamphlet that explores key elements of our project: gesture, the fold, the detail, and the frame. Working from photographs of the charcoal drawings produced during the performances, we will make a multiple that is at once an artwork and a handout to accompany future presentations of Carried Away.
