In my artistic practice, I explore the contribution of the arts—and the artist—to current societal transformations through the prism of cultural cross-fertilization and the [re]construction of meaning it implies. It is in this distinctly anthropological perspective that I set up participatory projects, often with an uninitiated public, in order to engage in a spirit of co-creation. In this way, I set up a tension between the poles of the intimate and collective with the aim of creating try to new ways of understanding modes of peaceful co-existence, by putting the links between the intimate and the collective into tension.
By means of installation-based staging, my deeply multidisciplinary visual language blends gleaned, salvaged and recycled objects with those designed specifically for the projects. The result is a reflection on a mixed identity that translates different ways of ordering/representing the world, or even of revealing/proposing new ways of being in the world.
Sarah Toung ondo was born in Bordeaux, France, and is of Franco-Gabonese origin. She grew up in France and Gabon, which had a strong influence on her artistic practice. After studying design and art history, she began a programme in social and historical anthropology, which led her to complete a Master's degree at Université Toulouse II. It was during her fieldwork research that she discovered Quebec City's artistic community and decided to make it her home. Also a graduate of the Maison des Métiers d'arts de Québec in textile construction, Sarah is a jack-of-all-trades who likes to explore mediums in order to question the links between art, intimacy and society through the prism of cultural cross-fertilization.
Sarah Toung ondo has been selected by Skol as part of the PRESENCES project. Following her residency at Centre SAGAMIE, she will take part in a group exhibition at Skol in spring 2025.
