Alejandra Zamudio is a Colombian artist based in Montreal. Her artwork stems from a committed journaling practice that keeps her engaged with the abundance that can be found in the mundane. The content of these journals populate her large scale drawings, guide her material explorations as well as nourish her installation projects. Her recent drawings on paper and on textile explore the symbolic depth of dreams and the act of observation as a portal to the unknown.
Zamudio creates images and installations that embody her fascination with the pictorial language of children's stories, religious symbolism, and the world around her. The change of seasons, the menstrual cycle, angels, plants, bats, her dog, and the mother-daughter bond are central elements in the construction of her visual vocabulary. Her works undergo several material processes. She colors, paints, stitches, dyes, and rips them, infusing them with life and history. Graphic and figurative elements emerge from layers of atmospheric, abstract color. The tactile quality of the images comes from her use of layered colors and varied materials.
Zamudio received her BFA in Studio Arts from Concordia University in 2019. Since 2022, her work has been featured in The Art Volt Collection (Montreal, QC), and in 2023 she had her second solo show hosted by the Filministes Film Festival (Montreal, QC). Between 2021-2022, she ran the periodical Creadoras: women artists zine with contributions from local and international artists. She was part of Artch’s cohort (Montreal, QC) in 2023, in 2024 she completed a research and creation residency at Casa Taller el Boga ( Mompox, COL). In the upcoming months, as part of the Presences program, she will be completing a residency at Sagamie (Alma, QC) followed by a group show at SKOL (Montreal, QC).
Alejandra Zamudio has been selected by Skol as part of the PRÉSENCES project. Following her residency at Centre SAGAMIE, she will take part in a group exhibition at Skol in spring 2025.
