Picardy Psalms / On the potentially deadly unpredictability of moose

For almost ten years now, the Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie (Quebec) and Diaphane (Hauts-de-France) have been engaged in an in-depth process of hosting, cross-fertilization and co-publishing. The result is a veritable creative laboratory for artists and both organizations, reflected in the programming of two annual contemporary arts events. One in France, the other on the Gaspé Peninsula. The artists' influence is at the heart of this project, which has taken them abroad and enriched the partnership by combining literature, poetry and photography.

On the Quebec side, writer Philippe Garon and photographer Judith Bellavance immersed themselves in the heart of Clermont, France, capturing the city's distinctive features in their respective media, while on the French side, writer Patrice Juiff and photographer Robert Charlotte crossed the vast spaces of the Gaspé Peninsula to meet its inhabitants.

These crossovers between words and photographs take us on a fictional voyage of discovery of environments specific to their territory.

This publication is a collaboration between Centre SAGAMIE, DIAPHANE éditions and the Rencontres de la photographie en Gaspésie.

Judith Bellavance et Robert Charlotte

The work of Montrealer Judith Bellavance revolves around the experience of loss and disappearance. Using photographic objects as poetic and evocative witnesses to dispossession, she nourishes memory and sensation. Her work brings together the essential elements of still life: narrative, life cycle, death and transformation. It is about collection, composition and suggestion.

Robert Charlotte was born in Martinique, where he grew up and now lives. From an early age, his interest in the family album was as much a source of pleasure as it was a trigger. His research takes a social viewpoint in the form of photographic portraits. He takes a systematic look at the behavior, attitudes and expressions of social groups.

Authors

Philippe Garon

Philippe Garon, father of the post-neobotchist movement, defines himself as an inhabitant and generalist of the literary arts. Born in 1974 in Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, he explores storytelling, poetry, narrative, theater, essays, songs and novels. A gregarious animal, writing for him is mostly about encounters and movement: getting his dog to walk him, lumbering, gardening, skiing. He loves trees, philosophy and vegetable soup.

Patrice Juiff

Patrice Juiff is a French actor, novelist and short-story writer. He is the author of four novels, Frère et Sœur (Plon, 2003),Kathy (Albin Michel, 2006), Tous les hommes s'appellent Richard (Ecriture, 2015) and Foreveur (Editions Du Rocher, 2016). His collection of short stories, La taille d'un ange (Albin Michel, 2008), won the Grand Prix de la nouvelle de la Société des Gens De Lettres.
