This book presents the work of Christopher Varady-Szabo, an artist known for his sculptures and installations inspired by primitive architecture and traditional craft building techniques. Two essays, including Memories of Earth by artist and writer Adrienne Luce and Sensible Chaos by writer and art critic John Grande, shed light on twenty years of ephemeral, muddy works made with natural materials, the dynamic elements of air, water and fire, and living elements.
Memory of the Earth, Sensitive Chaos
Christopher Varady-Szabo
Originally from Sydney, Australia, Christopher Varady-Szabo has now lived in Gaspé, Quebec for over thirty years. His practice consists primarily of sculptures and ephemeral installations that act as catalysts to an experience of the organic and elemental. He adheres to an aesthetic of nature that uses life in its noblest expression and seeks to reactivate "primary space", a way of being more attuned to instinct. His work has earned him numerous grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Canada Council for the Arts.
