Yann Pocreau was born in Quebec City in 1980. In his latest research he uses different types of mediums, including photography, sculpture and installation to explore light as a living subject and as an element that impacts the narrative framework of images. Artificial light, its materiality and its essential contribution to his photographic thought, to photography itself, to its codes and to its relations to our world are subjects the artist focuses extensively on. The distinguishing characteristic of his recent projects is that they harness the projection apparatus and the light emanating from it as a raw material for his work. Whether white or in colour — in reference to film — the light bulb, as well as the obsolete Kodak colour chart, these luminous interventions have led him down new avenues that are more exploratory and abstract, but also increasingly contextual.
The artist has participated in several Canadian, American and European exhibitions, most recently at the Rencontres photographiques d'Arles. Various magazine have focused on his practice and his works are part of numerous collections, such as those of the National Bank of Canada, Hydro-Québec, Desjardins, Deloitte Toronto, City of Montreal, City of Longueuil, Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Musée d'art de Joliette, the Collection Prêt d'œuvres d'art of the Musée National des beaux-arts du Québec and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, where he will present his exhibition Impermanencies in 2021. He lives and works in Montreal.
