Magali Baribeau-Marchand explores the sensible material hidden away in the everyday, this infra-ordinary thread acts on our perception of the visible and invisible, of appearance an disappearance, of the minute and the poetic sign. Her visual arts practice is primarily expressed through sculptural installation, photography, writing and drawing. Emerging from a confrontation between raw and delicate materials, and a great mobility—hers and that of the materials she set up in space—her works play on notions of impermanence and incompleteness, which are observable in everyday environments. She applies intuitive strategies by observing, gathering and altering images, objects and materials to bring about their reenchantment.
Magali Baribeau-Marchand lives in Chicoutimi, where she is currently furthering her practice as part of her MFA studies at Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. Over the past years, she has carried out various residencies on the international stage, notably as part of the Résidences croisées Alsace, France / Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Québec program presented in partnership with Langage Plus at Alma (QC), the CEAAC at the Agence culturelle FRAC Alsace in Strasbourg, as well as at the Vyhod Media Center in Petrozavodsk (Russia), as part of the AIR Karelia program. Her work has been disseminated in several artist-run centres in Quebec, as well as part of events such as the International Contemporary Art Fair ART-ATHINA in Athens (Greece), the Foire d'art contemporain in Saint-Lambert and the Symposium d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul (in a duo along with Sara Létourneau). She will soon carry out a three-month research-creation residency in Belgium as part of the Échanges d’artistes et d'ateliers-résidences Québec – Belgique BPS22 program offered by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
