Geneviève Thibault is a visual artist based in Matane. Photography is the mainspring of her practice that also links up with other mediums, such as sound art, video and installation. She is interested in otherness, everyday life, material culture, ways of occupying and living on the land. Several of her creative projects involve unannounced visits in domestic surroundings. She views the home as a vehicle that connects identity with otherness, interiority and sociability. It is through home decoration, with its objects and traces of everyday life, that the artist establishes a relationship with the Other. Gradually, she substituted overseas travels to travels closer to home. Through her various projects she hopes to develop a means of understanding Otherness through an at once material and sensible observation of inhabited space.
Her photographic work has been displayed in events and exhibitions in Quebec, Ontario and Europe. Her book of photographs, titled Blanc and published by Éditions Cayenne, uses images to tell the story of the everyday life of the Ursulines nuns in Quebec. Since 2019, she has taught photography at the Cégep de Matane, all the while pursuing an MFA in arts practice at Université du Québec en Outaouais. She has received a research grant from the SSHRC for her master's project, in addition to funding support from the CALQ and the Prix international des Nouvelles Écritures awarded by the French association Freelens. During her residency at the Centre SAGAMIE, the artist aims to pursue her reflection on the photographic book as a creation space. On upcoming October 7, she will participate in the roundtable discussion L’édition comme finalité presented as part of the MOMENTA biennale de l’image (Montréal) satellite programming.
Through its transportation, technical assistance and work dissemination support, the project Résidences Inter-Centres will ensure a Quebec-wide visibility for artists who have chosen to pursue their careers in the regions. This interregional exchange program between the Centre SAGAMIE and six co-production centres (Vaste et vague (Carleton-sur-Mer), Est-Nord-Est (Saint-Jean-Port-Joli), Admare (Îles-de-la-Madeleine), Caravansérail (Rimouski), Espace F (Matane), L'Écart (Rouyn-Noranda)) will make it possible to develop structuring partnerships by fostering communication and exchange between these artist-run centres who share the situation of being located at the periphery of large urban centres.
